3 Expert Tips for a Healthy Scalp

Scalp problems are associated with a range of different symptoms — the most common symptoms being dryness, tightness and itchiness. If you’re bothered by dandruff, you’re not alone. According to Dr. Marta Rendon, celebrity dermatologist for Head & Shoulders, more than 50 percent of people suffer from dandruff at least once in their life, making it the most common of all scalp problems.

Fortunately, Rendon says, there’s a lot you can do to get a healthy scalp and soft, shiny hair again.

1. Shampoo Hair for a Healthy Scalp
Maintaining a healthy scalp starts in the shower.

“Shampooing is the easiest and most effective way to clean your scalp and keep it healthy,” Rendon says. “The shampooing action invigorates follicles, reduces the excessive sebum buildup that can lead to dandruff and oiliness, and prevents excess skin from accumulating on the scalp.”

For best results, look for a shampoo with zinc pyrithione. Zinc pyrithione reduces the amount of fungus on the scalp, which is a leading cause of dandruff. Other contributors include scalp oils, diet, stress and your individual susceptibility to skin irritation.

2. Massage for a Healthy Scalp
Did you know that massaging your scalp can help relieve problems such as dandruff?

First, wash your hair with dandruff-fighting shampoo, which rejuvenates your hair and scalp. Massage the shampoo into your scalp for a minute or two to help loosen dead skin cells and increase circulation to the scalp. Rinse, and then follow with a specially formulated conditioner to maintain protection for your hair and scalp.

3. Make Small Changes to Your Everyday
Besides using the right products, eating well and getting regular exercise are two things that can help you maintain a healthy scalp.

“Bad nutrition — including crash diets — has been shown to have a negative impact on hair quality and may even cause hair loss,” Rendon says.

Consume a balanced diet that includes zinc, B vitamins, essential fatty acids, biotin, protein and iron to help promote lustrous locks and a healthy scalp.

“Minimize the amount of styling products you use and the frequency with which you use them, as many of them can contribute to the buildup of oils on your scalp,” Rendon says.
