HELPING HAITI

Dr. Greg Allgood: I'm Greg Allgood, the Director of the Children's Safe Drinking Water program. I'm here in Haiti at the Hotel Montana, just one of the many places where there was destruction, rubble, many people perished here, like in many parts of Haiti.

There's a critical need for safe drinking water. We've seen it in much of the city today, and the PUR® packets are providing a way for people to help themselves by providing safe drinking water.

P&G and our employees are donating so that we can provide more than 6 million PUR packets, enough to treat 60 million liters of drinking water, and we hope to do much more. Thank you for helping.

WORLD WATER CRISIS

Narrator: Enaughty John is one in a billion. Because a billion people living in the developing world don't have clean water to drink. It's an epidemic that is getting worse every year. But there is promise. Enaughty lives in Wamata, Tanzania. This is her story.

Enaughty John: Water is the most important thing in our lives. We depend on water for everything. For cooking, cleaning, giving to our children. This is why we walk 6 kilometers every day to get water. Our water is not clean to drink and we don't have anything to cure the water. Without clean water, there is no life.

Dr. Greg: It's motivation when you can take someone's dirty water and make it clean. It sort of goes to my belief that if you give people the tools to help themselves, that they will. So, my name is Dr. Greg Allgood, and we are gonna make some water clean using these PUR packets. Shake the powder down. PUR works in three ways. First, it removes the dirt, worms, and parasites that are in the water. Second, it kills the bacteria and viruses that will make you sick. Then, PUR leaves lasting protection so your water stays safe for several days. So you stir really well, so the result is crystal clear water.

Enaughty John: I would like to teach my village about using this technology to treat the water.

Dr. Greg: How's it taste? It tastes good huh? So we are going to give Enaughty this box of PUR, so there's enough for 2,400 liters of clean water. Thumbs up?

Enaughty John: I'm a member of the village council and we've been trying to find ways to protect people from disease in the water. If we can have clean water, we can have a better life.

Dr. Greg: Women are really the heroes in addressing the global water crisis because they can use PUR to treat their drinking water and to make their family healthy and that's what mothers want the most.

Narrator: Help people like Enaughty get the clean water they really need. When you buy a PUR Pitcher or Faucet Filter to clean your water at home, we'll provide 10 liters of clean water to those who need it most, through our Children's Safe Drinking Water program. Visit purwater.com.

WATER DEMO

Dr. Greg: Hi, I'm Dr. Greg Allgood, and I'm here with Owen, Emily, Taj, and Molly. We're gonna make some water clean and purified with these PUR packets. OK, guys, you ready? All right.

So, we take one of these packets, we open it with a pair of scissors… cut that right... and we add the entire contents to two and a half gallons or 10 liters of water.

Taj: Is it going to be chocolate water?

Dr. Greg: No. You know this water is really contaminated when we start with it, but we're gonna make it clean so we can drink it. Isn't that neat? So, I added it to two and a half gallons, and now we have to stir for five minutes.

Can you see it? Everybody see it? What's happening?

Taj: All, everything is going.

Emily: It's sort of like a little tornado.

Dr. Greg: What's happening, Molly?

Taj: I see all, I see all the bacteria going in the tornado.

Emily: Oh my God!

Taj: That's cool!

Owen: Those bubble things aren't bubbles.

Emily: I know, they aren't bubbles.

Taj: And they're sticking on each other.

Emily: Now it's not as, it's not as brown anymore right here.

Dr. Greg: Yeah, it's getting clear, isn't it? It's getting… so that we can drink it.

Owen: How come the whole bottom has all the filth?

Dr. Greg: Isn't that neat?

Molly: Yeah.

Dr. Greg: 'Cause it's gonna all fall to the bottom. And in case some of it hasn't fallen to the bottom, we'll pour it through this cloth so we can make sure that all this stuff falls to the bottom.

So how long did we stir for? Owen, how long did we stir for?

Owen: Five minutes.

Dr. Greg: Yep. And now we let it sit for five minutes.

So, I think it's time to pour it. So, be careful molly.

Taj: Is it heavy?

Dr. Greg: It is heavy. I made a little bit of a mess, didn't I?

Emily: Yeah.

Taj: It's a big mess. It's a big mess.

Emily: Oh my gosh! All the dirty stuff is staying up at the top.

Dr. Greg: Yep. That's why we use a clean cotton cloth.

Dr. Greg: You think I should pour all that mud or should we stop?

Taj: Mmmm... stop.

Dr. Greg: I think we should stop, 'cause it would make the cloth all gross. Now, look at all the dirt and the worms.

Kids: Where are the worms?

Dr. Greg: Well, I think they're too small to see. They're little parasites. So, what we do with this is we pour that in the commode, the toilet, and we flush it down. Or in the developing world they sometimes don't have commodes, and so they put it in the latrines.

Taj: Hey, it's not taking 20 minutes...

Dr. Greg: Now, we have to wait for 20 minutes.

So, no, when we went the first time to Haiti some of those people didn't have watches.

Taj: Watches?

Dr. Greg: They, 'cause we said wait 20 minutes. And we said, 'How are they going to know 20 minutes if they don't have watches?' It was a problem. But you know what they knew? All the mothers knew how to do?

Taj: The what?

Dr. Greg: The mothers, the mommies. They, all mommies, they cooked green bananas. They cooked green bananas and it takes 20 minutes to cook green bananas, and so they all knew 20 minutes.

You know what we have to do next, is...

Taj: Drink it now?

Dr. Greg: We have to get ready to drink it now. By the time we get it in these cups, it'll be time to… and you know what? I'm thirsty.

So, we don't want to put our hands in this water, do we?

Kids: No.

Dr. Greg: 'Cause that would just make it so it's not safe again.

Taj: Then we'd have to pour it back in there.

Dr. Greg: So instead…

Molly: Who wants that one?

Dr. Greg: That one's Taj, that one's Molly's, this one's Dr. Greg's, this one's Emily… oh, but wait a second. Dr. Greg's thirsty; he's a big guy… so, we're gonna give him a full one. Is that OK?

Whoops. So here's for Taj; this is for little Molly. You guys got yours? Cheers, guys!

Owen: It smells sort of like chlorine.

Dr. Greg: It smells a little bit like chlorine; that's what keeps all the things so it's safe to drink. Wow, Molly was thirsty, huh?

PUR SCIENCE

VO: Hey, it's me, water. So you're probably thinking that drinking filtered tap water is a good idea, right? Welcome to the common sense club.

As it turns out, not all filters are created equal. Check this out. This is a PUR Pitcher. And this is the other leading pitcher.

And this represents things you don't want in your drinking water. Like giardia and crypto-fragilistic—AKA microbial cysts, which can lead to gastrointestinal illness, like an upset stomach or worse. Yuck.

Now normally, there aren't this many little critters in your water. So we've added thousands and thousands of extras to show how well PUR works and how labs test this stuff.

That's also what those little tiny words at the bottom of the screen are telling you. But you're not going to read that anyway.

So, here we go; bear with me. This'll only take a second.

(Zach hums a non-recognizable tune.)

Well, well, looky here... PUR is certified to remove 99.95% of these microbial cysts... but there's all kinds of crazy stuff in their water.

Phew, now that that's out of the way, which one are you gonna choose? The PUR Pitcher that's certified to remove microbial cysts like giardia and cryptosporific... whatever it is... or the leading pitcher that can't make that claim. Hmmmm. Sounds like a no-brainer to me. PUR. Good clean water.
