How to Remove Pet Stains

Downy Unstopables™ In-Wash Scent Booster

You love the softness of Downy®. Now add the feisty freshness of new Downy UNSTOPABLES, an in-wash scent booster that goes beyond everyday freshness to keep active wear, bed sheets and other fabrics smelling “wow” right up until the next wash.
Your feline friend made a statement on the carpet and it’s your turn to clean it up. It’s not fun; but, it can be easier. Here are a few tips from The Humane Society and Tide® on how to remove pet stains and odor.
Our pets are sensitive beings — and creatures of habit. So, when they decide to make a habit of soiling the carpet or the new couch, it can be difficult to break them of it. Before you resign yourself to a life of nose plugs and a strict “no houseguests” policy, make sure you’ve taken the following steps to let your pets know you want them to be comfortable relieving themselves — within reason.

Identify the Source

The smell can usually lead you to a targeted area that your pet has labeled as his territory. However, sometimes smells can be deceiving. If you have an odor that isn’t going away, you might try borrowing or purchasing a black light.

There’s Clean and Then There’s Clean

First things first: Soak up any urine you can. Getting rid of as much urine as possible before it dries will make your process easier. You may want to put the urine-soaked paper towels in the area you’d like your pet to use for future bathroom breaks.

Once the odor has set in, though, you’ll have to take some extra measures to get rid of it. Even if you no longer smell the urine, your pet might. You need to neutralize the odor.

Wash any items you can in the laundry, which could include pillow covers, couch covers, laundry or blankets. Use Tide With Febreze® Freshness to help clean away stains and odors from everywhere your pet lounges, including your bed sheets, a favorite (washable) rug, or crate liners and pads. It is specially formulated to help target and remove odors that get trapped in fabrics, and then it deposits "freshness actives." These freshness actives slowly release perfume over time, giving a burst of Febreze&® freshness that lasts for weeks. For added odor neutralizing, add a 1-pound box of baking soda to your detergent. Let these items air-dry.

Next, on to the carpet. Neutralizing cleaners won't work until you've rinsed every trace of the old cleaner from the carpet if you've previously used cleaners or chemicals of any kind on the area. Even if you haven't used chemicals recently, any trace of a non-protein-based substance will weaken the effect of the enzymatic cleaner. The cleaner will use up its "energy" on the old cleaners, instead of on the protein stains you want removed. Try using Febreze Pet Odor Eliminator on upholstery and carpets near your pet's favorite spots and virtually all over the house. Febreze can effectively eliminate odors, leaving a clean, fresh scent. And rest assured, Febreze is safe for use around pets. It has been safely used to combat odors in 40 million pet-owning homes around the world.

Check With the Vet

It’s important to check with your vet to make sure there isn’t a health risk at the root of your pet’s newest habit. There are many reasons your pet may be relieving himself somewhere you’d rather he not, but so long as his health is not a factor, with proper cleaning and a little more TLC, chances are good that you can come to an understanding that you’ll both be happier with.
