Drivers' Ed 101: Become a Better Driver

Ever been stuck in traffic only to see someone pull into the service lane to get ahead? Why is his or her time more important than yours? You could get angry. But how would you feel if you learned he or she had a family emergency? Wouldn't you do the same thing?
With high gas prices, high temperatures, crazy schedules, school almost back in session and more, summer driving can be frustrating. And studies have shown that more people stress out while driving compared to almost any other activity outside the home. Check out these three tips to help you drive down the tension and enjoy the ride.
Tip 1: You're Not a Better Driver Than Everyone Else

No matter how good a driver you think you are, 90% of the motorists out there have about the same level of skills and manners. You might be skeptical, but think about it this way: Have you ever cut someone off by accident or tailgated because you were in a rush? We all have.

The next time someone cuts you off or does something else to offend you while driving, try to remember that at one time or another, you've done the same thing to someone else. It sounds small, but you'll find that by keeping this perspective, it will be much easier to retain a level head.

Tip 2: Imagine Someone Is Driving Too Aggressively for a Good Reason — It Might Be True

Ever been stuck in traffic only to see someone pull into the service lane to get ahead? Why is his or her time more important than yours? You could get angry. But how would you feel if you learned he or she had a family emergency? Wouldn't you do the same thing?

Sure, the driver could just be rude and impatient, but the point is, you don't know. Assume there is a justifiable reason — it will make you feel better.

Tip 3: When All Else Fails, Wave It Off

Even if you follow the previous two tips, you might still encounter a few of those really bad drivers who get your blood boiling. However, waving to them is a simple gesture you can use to blow off some steam.

Why wave? To the other driver, it signals a conciliatory tone that says, "Hey, we all make mistakes." There's nothing worse than doing something you'll regret later. So, wave it off — and drive with a little more peace of mind.
