Just because school is out doesn't mean your child should take a break from structured mental stimulation. This summer, plan activities to help battle boredom and get your child ready for the next school year. Here are a few simple ways you and your child can have a memorable — and educational — summer.
Reading Readiness
Make reading more fun by starting a kids' book club in the neighborhood and throwing a party for everyone involved at the end of the summer. Your children and their friends will have something to look forward to and talk about.
Outdoor Occasion
One out of every five U.S. children is overweight. To keep kids active while school is out, limit TV time to less than two hours a day and make sure they get enough exercise. Here's one idea: Get the family outside to collect bugs, leaves or rocks. Then visit the library to read books about the things you've found.
Family Flings
Spending time with parents is vital to a child's mental health, so a family vacation is definitely a healthy experience for your children. Look for affordable, kid-friendly locations and help your children learn about the history, geography or people in the area. Another fun idea is to map out the trip with your child before leaving for a quick geography lesson.
Summer Structure
Because routines keep kids feeling secure and balanced, make sure that extended school vacations have structure. Set aside at least a half hour each day to give your children your undivided attention. Continue assigning chores over the summer to teach responsibility and important life skills. Helping out with dinner, for example, might end up as a lesson in measuring.
