How to Instill Healthy Habits in Kids

Kids will choose cookies over veggies. Watch TV instead of taking a walk. And skip good dental hygiene altogether. But with a few simple steps, you can help them develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
Beat the sweets.
Opportunities abound for kids to eat high-sugar foods. How can you encourage your child to choose low-sugar options for snacks and meals?
  • Lead them to water. Give your kids water at most meals and encourage them to drink it throughout the day to quench thirst and avoid dehydration. Make sugar-packed sodas and juices a rare treat instead of an everyday occurrence.
  • Create a food diary. Buy a colorful notebook. Then regularly sit down together to record what your child has eaten recently. Discuss the good choices he or she made as well as healthier options for next time.
Hit the streets.
Regular physical activity provides loads of benefits. Research suggests active kids may be less likely to engage in risky behaviors. They also are more likely to possess better self-esteem, earn higher grades and get more sleep.
  • Turn the tables. Tell your kids you want their help getting more physically active. Ask them to join you for walks, biking or even yard work. They'll feel good about encouraging you while they develop their own fitness routines.
  • Have an active outing. At least one day a week, select a special place for the family to visit that requires physical activity such as walking, swimming or biking. Head to a scenic trail, a rec center or even a tennis court (no one has to be a pro — just be prepared for fun).
Care for teeth.
While kids usually focus on the teeth coming out, you want them to take care of the ones that stay in. To get them in the healthy hygiene habit:
  • Give them some cool tools. A timer is a great way to help your kids brush for the two minutes experts recommend. Encourage flossing with a floss flavor they love.
  • Chart their success. Make or download a chart that lets your kids check off their completed dental routines. Seeing day-to-day accomplishments will motivate your child to keep brushing.
