Garage Sale Secrets: Reclaim Your House and Make Some Dough!

Garage sales are a great way to clean out your home while bonding with your family, but if you do it right you also can make some serious cash. Chances are, you've been to a garage sale or two. Some are full of junk. Others have great deals. But which made more money? You might be surprised. The following are some smart ways to get the most out of your next garage sale and also give your family a fun weekend together!
Step 1: Find stuff to sell.

• Go through every room, along with your basement, attic and garage. Look in every drawer, underneath the sink, etc.
• Unless the item is hazardous or has dangerously loose parts, sell it. You will be amazed at what people will buy, from mystery utensils, to old shirts, etc. If you throw this stuff out, you could be throwing away money.
• Get your kids involved and have them go through their old toys and clothes. This is a great opportunity to teach them the basics about commerce and sales.
• Put all of the items you plan to sell in one location and have your family do a final walk-through to avoid any post-sale remorse.

Step 2: Price it all.

• Price everything before the garage sale, but don't start too low. A very common garage sale mistake is to price items far lower than what people actually would pay.
• Use pricing labels or stickers. By labeling everything with a price tag, you'll avoid confusion. This could take a while, so don't wait until the day before!

Step 3: Get the word out.

• A newspaper ad is still the most popular way to advertise a garage sale. If you have big-ticket items such as furniture or electronics, be specific. Also, give the exact times, date, neighborhood and address.
• Put flyers on bulletin boards at nearby supermarkets.
• Place outdoor posters at busy intersections. Be sure to have arrows on the posters that point in the direction leading to your home. Place additional posters further along the route so someone could follow them to your garage sale.
• Did you know that the most successful garage sale days are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, but not Sunday? Now you do!

Step 4: Get organized.

• Instead of just putting items on a table, separate and organize everything by room functionality (e.g., kitchen, bathroom, outdoor, etc.).
• Place one big-ticket item close to the street and the rest of your good stuff in the back. This will draw people in and "force" them to look at the smaller things you're selling.
• Have a plugged-in extension cord available so people can give powered items a try.

You'll be amazed at how rejuvenating a cleaned-out home will feel! So use these tips to get your whole family involved while you put more money in your pocket. It will be time well spent!
