How to Make a Family Web Site
Are you looking for a way to keep out-of-town friends and relatives up to date with what's going on in your family? Why not create a family Web site? It's relatively simple, lots of fun and a great way to digitally document the memories and history of your family. And you don't have to be a programmer — the Web publishing software available today can pretty much walk you through it.

Where Do You Start?

First, you'll want to take a look at your online options. "When you're looking at other family Web sites, focus on structure as well as content," says Allison Stacy, editor of "Family Tree" magazine. "Pick your favorites and see how they're laid out. Check out what kinds of information others have posted, and pay attention to how information is organized, and if it's easy to navigate."

"As you surf, save the URLs of well-done Web sites so you can refer to them later," Stacy says. "All these Web sites should be giving you ideas for your own."

Also, get an idea of the kind of family information others share on their Web sites. Do they include vacation and hobby photos? Individual pages for family members to contribute personal letters? Birthday and holiday information and photos? This will give you a sense of the kind of content you want to include on your Web site.

What's Next?
Now you want to find a Web host for your Web site. The first place you want to look is your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Many ISPs, such as America Online® and EarthLink, give you Web space with your membership, so investigate what you may already have.
