Can You Head Off the Winter Blahs?
Winter is here — complete with shorter days, darker skies and cooler temperatures. If you want to beat the winter blahs before they have a chance to surface, check out our tips for perking up your mood.
Lighten up. Shorter days mean fewer hours of natural sunlight, so you'll no doubt have to work a little harder to get your daily dose of sunshine. Try to get out for lunch and enjoy a brisk walk. You may have to bundle up, but the feel of the sun surely will brighten your step.

Be a busy bee. Organize your CDs, put together photo albums or finally clean out the attic. It doesn't matter what task you take on, just stay busy doing it! You'll hardly notice the winter blahs as they pass you by.

Turn up the tunes. One way to keep your spirits high is to make your mood match your music. If you want to feel energized, listen to upbeat music. A simple change in tune selection can have you marching to the beat of a different drummer.

Get away from it all. If you feel your spirits need a lift, plan a getaway. Even if it's just for the weekend, arranging a mini-escape will give you something to look forward to — besides the bitter forecast, of course!

Create a ritual. Revive your cold-weather routine by establishing a new ritual, such as a family movie night. Rent new releases, pop popcorn and curl up under your comfiest covers. This weekly event will ensure you always have something to look forward to.

Feel good with fitness. Even though it's the season of baggy pants and oversized sweaters, you'll feel better — both physically and mentally — if you keep up with your regular workouts. Take this opportunity to break out that Pilates tape you've had for months or join a class at the gym. Releasing endorphins will help ensure your spirits stay bright through the chilly months.

Make the most of it. Determine what bugs you the most about winter, and find a way to make the most of it. If it's the nonstop snow, have a snowball fight. By taking a negative and turning it into a positive, you can change your outlook toward the situation. So when life throws you a snowstorm, make a snowman!
