Summer fun can be hard on your hair. But a little hair-care know-how is all you need to beat the heat. Follow these five simple guidelines, and you'll be well on your way to healthy summer hair.
1. Cover Up!
Everyone loves a warm summer's day. But if you plan to spend an entire day soaking up the sun, your best bet is to wear a hat. Why? Because your hair actually can get burned by the sun. According to P&G Beauty Scientist Dr. John Gray, the sun's ultraviolet rays affect hair cuticles in a way similar to bleach. The result is that hair is gradually weakened and becomes drier.
2. Pretreat Your Hair Before a Swim
Chlorine can leave your hair dry and brittle. The good news, however, is that your hair is like a sponge: It can only absorb so much chlorine. So wet your hair with tap water or take a quick shower before you dive into that sparkling blue pool. The wetter your hair is before you swim, the less chlorine it will absorb.
