15 Ways to Bond With Your Family This Summer
FromHealth Expressions

Even in the summer, getting outside sometimes can feel like a challenge. So here's a little motivation: Outdoor activities typically burn more calories than staying indoors, and they help regulate your body's internal clock so you can sleep better.
It can be hard coming up with something new to get your family motivated, which is why we've come up with 15 ways to get your family out of the house. All you have to do is open the door and go.

1. Destination walk. If you're within a mile or two of somewhere that serves food, make that the goal, and have your family walk to it to get an edible reward.

2. Bug hunt. Your backyard has thousands of insects above and below ground. How many can your kids find?

3. Plant a plan. Create a garden. Give each family member a section to take care of and hold a contest for the best results.

4. Build to sit. Find plans for an outdoor bench or chair online and then get the family involved in building it together.

5. Go hiking. Gather your family and ensure everyone is ready to get some exercise. Wear hiking boots and take off on a pretty trail. It's a great opportunity to bond with your loved ones while enjoying a beautiful day.

6. People watch. Go to the park, find a crowded spot and watch away. Create stories for the people you see and then share your tales with your family.

7. See the stars. If you live in a city, try a night away from the bright lights and take your family stargazing — or find out when your local observatory or planetarium is open to the public.

8. Find an art show. Many communities and neighborhoods have summer art shows or gallery walks. Find one near you and get your art on. Children's activities often are included.

9. Cell scavenger hunt. Take close-up pictures with your camera phone and then challenge your kids to find the locations. Hide a reward at each site.

10. Emergency auto training. Go to an empty parking lot to learn how to change a tire, jump-start a car and more.

11. Litter getter. Contact your local department of sanitation or park services to participate in a community cleanup project for a park, road or river.

12. Have a picnic. Pack your favorite lunch, such as PB&J sandwiches, fresh fruit and oatmeal cookies, and spread out your feast on a blanket in the backyard, or at a nearby park under a shady tree.

13. Rain play. Next time a downpour hits, put on some old clothes and play a messy game of tag or touch football in the backyard.

14. Paint the driveway. Using your favorite family picture as a template, use chalk paint to re-create a larger version over the length of your driveway or sidewalk.

15. Garage-sale hunting. Check your local paper for the locations, use your favorite online map program to find them and plan a day full of garage sales around town.
